Area high school football teams will begin their respective preseason schedules this Friday night with scrimmages.
All four Herald-area teams will be hosting scrimmages this week, and all will be on the road next week as they tune up for the start of the season on August 26.
Buckingham will host Altavista in a two-team scrimmage on Friday night at 6 p.m. The two teams have been scrimmaging one-another for several seasons, and it has been beneficial for both programs. Altavista won the Group A, Division 1 State Championship in 2009, and had another solid campaign in 2010, and Buckingham went undefeated in regular-season play in 2009, and advanced to the Region B, Division 2 championship game in 2010.
Next week, the Knights will travel to another familiar pre-season venue, as they take part in the Riverheads Jamboree on Saturday, August 20.
Buckingham will begin its regular-season schedule on Friday, August 26 at home against traditional season-opening rival Appomattox at 7 p.m.
Cumberland will square off against a couple of familiar sparring partners on Friday night as the Dukes host West Point and William Campbell at 6 p.m. in a three-team scrimmage.
Next Friday, August 19, the Dukes will travel to Craig County High School for a 7 p.m. Virginia High School League benefit game against Craig County.
Cumberland will begin its regular-season on September 2 at home against Prince Edward at 7 p.m.
Fuqua hosts neighboring Randolph-Henry High School on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Gilmer Field. Like the other area schools, the Falcons and Statesmen are familiar preseason sparring partners.
Fuqua will travel to Bluestone next Thursday (August 18) for a 7 p.m. scrimmage. The two teams have scrimmaged one-another for the last three seasons.
The Falcons will travel to Brunswick Academy on Friday, August 26 at 7 p.m. to begin both regular-season and Virginia Commonwealth Conference play.
The James Ford era will get underway unofficially this Friday when the Eagles host Bluestone for a 6:30 p.m. scrimmage. Bluestone moves from the Southside District into the James River this season. The Eagles, who are coming off back-to-back 1-9 campaigns, garnered both victories over the Barons, who have gone winless over that stretch.
Next Thursday (August 18), the Eagles will travel to Randolph-Henry for a 6:30 p.m. scrimmage.
The Eagles will open up regular-season play on Friday, August 26 at home against Fluvanna.
