PE Has Snow Route Options

PRINCE EDWARD – A dusting of snow, and one lost instructional day could offer a foretaste of yet another winter and a snow bank of missed days.

Though they haven't been used in years, county school board members talked snow bus routes at their December 8 meeting.

According to Director of Support Services Richard Goode, they are the same as the past, though he said they have made a couple of additions.

“Those roads are basically dead ends or unpaved roads,” Goode explained. “And they really are not the top priority when it comes to cleaning 'cause they try to do the major highways or major thoroughways…but they eventually get to…those roads also.”

Goode added that some are passable and the ones that are passable they'll call the parents and let them know that a bus can come down the road.

Any time there is inclement weather, Goode earlier highlighted, he and the supervisor of transportation personally go up and down those roads that are passable. They get reports from the Virginia Department of Transportation, State Police, Sheriff's Department and go out themselves and physically look at those roads.

School board member Linda Leatherwood asked how long it had been since the routes were used. Goode offered that it's been awhile-possibly when then Superintendent Dr. Anderson may have been here.

Goode noted that they would put the routes on the school's website, send it to The Herald and may send copies home by the students on each bus “just in case we need to use it. But it's been…my experience that when we can't come to school, we can't come to school.”

The Routes

The snow bus routes identify meeting points (though they are subject to change). Those who live on identified roads are expected to meet at the closest intersection; parents and guardians are also expected to meet at designated locations morning and afternoon.
