With a strong showing in the second half of the season, the Prince Edward County High School volleyball team captured third place overall in the Southside District standings, and advanced into Wednesday's semifinal round of the four-team Southside District Volleyball Tournament.

The Lady Eagles (13-6, 8-5 prior to their regular-season finale at Southampton) will be familiar with their semifinal round opponent, as they'll again travel to Southampton for the semifinals on Wednesday night.

“We've played about as good as we can play down the stretch,” said PECHS head coach Bruce Bogese, on Friday night. “We'll have a dress rehearsal against Southampton on Monday, and on Wednesday, we'll see if we can get a Region playoff berth.”

The Lady Eagles fared well in-district against teams not named Powhatan or Southampton. The Lady Eagles were swept by Powhatan, which included a 3-0 loss to the Lady Indians last week.

“We pushed them in the second game and frustrated them a little,” said Bogese. “They have some kids who play volleyball year-round, and we don't. We have to take a different approach into a match like that. We were loose, and in a way, it was a fun loss.”

Prince Edward's Southside District semifinal against Southampton will start at 7 p.m. The winner will most likely be assured of a Region I playoff berth, and will most likely travel to Powhatan on Thursday night for a 7 p.m. contest.

Virginia Commonwealth Conference

The Fuqua School volleyball team captured a tie for third place in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference standings with an overall league record of 11-5 to tie Tidewater Academy. However, due to a tiebreaker, the Lady Falcons were awarded the fourth seed in this week's Virginia Commonwealth Conference Tournament.

Fuqua was scheduled to host No. 5 Southampton Academy on Tuesday night in Gilmer Gymnasium, while Tidewater hosts Kenston Forest.

Christchurch was the regular-season champion, and was scheduled to play the No. 8 seed (Brunswick Academy/Amelia Academy winner), while No. 2 seed Richmond Christian was scheduled to host BS-Huguenot on Tuesday night.

The VCC Tournament Semifinals and finals will be held Thursday and Saturday at Christchurch.

The Fuqua/Southampton winner will face the Christchurch/No.8 seed winner on Thursday evening.

James River District

The Cumberland High School volleyball team won its James River District Tournament Quarterfinal match over Amelia County on Monday night 3-0, and was scheduled to travel to Randolph-Henry on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the JRD Semifinals.

Against Amelia, Cumberland edged the Lady Raiders 25-23 in the first set, and worked to a 25-20 victory in the second, before cruising to a 25-4 victory in the third.

Heather Fowler led the Dukes with nine kills and five aces, while Breanna Davis had seven digs to go along with four aces. Mackenzie Parker registered six kills, four aces and five digs, while Cassie Martin had three blocks, four kills and six aces.

Buckingham secured the No. 2 seed in the tournament, and was scheduled to host Central of Lunenburg on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

The winners will play on Thursday night at the highest remaining seed for the JRD Tournament championship.
