Dukes Sweep JRD Cross Country Meets

CHESTERFIELD – The Cumberland High School boys cross country teams claimed the James River District Championship in a meet held on Wednesday at Pocohontas State Park in Chesterfield.

The Dukes totaled 29 points to take the team title over Amelia (41 points) and Randolph-Henry (58 points).

Buckingham's Jamise Payne took first place individually on the 5K trail with a time of 18:48.21 – nearly a minute in front of second place finisher Codi Ward, of Cumberland, who turned in a time of 19:47.58. Amelia's Orlando Baker was third with a time of 19:58.77.

Cumberland's Matthew Horton placed fifth with a time of 20:28.65, while Jacob Mullins (21:34.09, Steven Winslow (21:58.56) and Zachary Barnette (22:23.67) finished eighth, ninth and tenth respectively.

Payne was named the James River District's Runner of the Year, while CHS head coach Carrington Light was named the Coach of the Year.

Cumberland posted a team average of 21:14.51, nearly a minute better than Amelia's team average of 22:06.73.

The Cumberland High School girls team was the only school to field a complete team in the James River District girls meet.

The Lady Dukes posted an average time of 30:22.98, and were led by Iesha Byakatonda, who completed the 5K course in 25:06.16.

Amelia's Megan Biddle won the individual title with a run of 22:57.76, while Randolph-Henry's Jaden Nichols finished third with a time of 25:35.92.

Biddle was named the JRD Female Runner of the Year.
