BUCKINGHAM, Sept. 16 – Robert Self Maxey, Sr. “Bob”, 80, of Buckingham, died at his residence on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, after an extended illness. He was born on April 8, 1930, in Buckingham County to Leonard F. Maxey and Etta Self Maxey. He was one of 10 children.
He served in the Signal Corp, Special Services, during the Korean War. As a devoted full-time farmer, he served in various capacities over the years including the Farmer's Cooperative Board for 27 years, was president and director of Buckingham Farm Bureau and president of the Buckingham Cattlemen's Association. In 1997, he and his brothers, Julian and Bill, were presented the Cattleman of the Year Award. He also attended Virginia Tech.
Mr. Maxey was a lifelong member of Sharon Baptist Church in Buckingham County where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School superintendent.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Williams Black Maxey; five children, Robert S. Maxey Jr. (Debbie), Chet W. Maxey (Lynette), Donald R. Maxey (Renee), Rhonda Maxey Bowman (Jim), and Kimberly Maxey Rumsey (Chris); 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews; brother, F. Henry Maxey of Chatham; and two sisters, Mary Maxey Patteson of Front Royal and Josephine Maxey White of Isle of Wight. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alene Patteson Maxey, five brothers, Leonard F. Maxey Jr., Herbert E. Maxey Sr., Julian A. Maxey, William A. Maxey, and James E. Maxey, and one sister, Elizabeth Maxey Hunter.
Mr. Maxey loved his family, his church, and his friends. They will all miss him dearly.
A memorial service will be held at Sharon Baptist Church on Saturday, September 18, at 2 p.m. Visitation will follow at the home of Rob and Debbie Maxey.
