'Ted” Hodges, 71 Retired Tobacconist Dies Sunday

APRIL 20 – Elisha Edward “Ted” Hodges, Jr., of Farmvllle, died Sunday, April 18, 2004 at Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond.

He was born in Halifax County, December 20, 1932 and was 71 years of age. He was the son of the late Elisha Edward Hodges and Helen Palmer Hodges.

Mr. Hodges was a member of the First Baptist Church of South Boston, former member of Farmvllle Rotary Club and a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity of Wake Forest College. He attended Wake Forest and the University of Richmond. He retired after 49 years as a tobacconist, first with J.P. Taylor Tobacco Company, then with Universal Leaf Tobacco Company. He served in Argentina, Venezuela and Europe. He was president of Dunnington Beach Tobacco Company in Farmvllle from 1974 to 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara C. Hodges; two daughters, Terri H. Holt and husband, Teddy of South Boston and Sharon H. Gray of Charlotte, NC; one son, Elisha Edward Teddy” Hodges and wife, Sarah of Farmvllle and five grandchildren, Emily Grey Holt and Edward Tyler Holt both of South Boston, Richard Edward Gray of Chapel Hill, NC, Elizabeth Redd Hodges and Kyle Perkins Hodges of Farmvllle.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel, South Boston, with the Rev. Doug Martin conducting the service. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening (Tuesday) from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
