Raymond Johnson, 95 Dies March 12 At Southside Hospital

MARCH 17 – Raymond Sydna Johnson, 95, passed away Thursday, March 12, 2009 at Southside Community Hospital, Farmville. He was the husband of the late Helen Moore Johnson and father of the late Carolyn Johnson Bell. Born June 16, 1913, in Campbell County, Mr. Johnson was the son of the late Richard Armstead and Lou Greene Johnson.

The Johnson family moved to Prospect in 1934. He was a farmer and would always say “Proud to be a Farmer.” Raymond was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a grand-daughter, Faith Bell of Lynchburg; son-in-law, Melvin Bell of Lynchburg; brother, Sydnor Leigh Johnson and wife, Arlene of Lynchburg; sisters-in-law, Frances Anderson of Farmville and Lois Johnson of Prospect; nieces and nephews, Betty Southall and Adron Moore of Richmond, Ann Johnson and George Dolan of Buckingham County, Paula Johnson and Robert Card of Pamplin, Mary Crews and Jim Sammartino of Gainesville, and Howard and Bobby Johnson of Prospect.

He was proceeded in death by a sister, Lou J. Southall; brothers, Robert, Willard, Paul, Lewis, Clyde and Edward; half-sisters, Susie Putney, Mary Crews and Lucille Sprouse.

Raymond had many friends, and he loved to talk with every-one. He enjoyed the visits of family and friends and special was the holiday visit of his great-great nieces from Port-land, OR.

Services were held Sunday in the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home, with interment in the Westview Cemetery.
