Nannie Wood, 93 Set 10:30 A.M. Friday

FEBRUARY 17 – Nannie Dunkley Webster Wood, 93, of Farmville, went peacefully home to be with her Lord on Monday, February 16, 2009. The daughter of Archer and Mary Dunkley, she was born in Foxboro, NC, and was the fourth of seven children. Nannie was married in 1941 in New York City to Emmett Graham Webster, who died in 1960. In 1964 she wed Herbert R. Wood, to whom she was married for 43 years.

Nannie earned her RN Degree from Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond, then worked at the Baptist Hospital in New Orleans and the Women's Hospital in New York, where she completed post graduate studies in Obstetrical Nursing. After marrying, she returned to Farmville where she worked private duty nursing for many years while raising her family. In 1969 she was named the first Director of the Southside Community Hospital School of Practical Nursing, and then later was the company nurse at Stackpole Corp.

Nannie always loved the Lord and doing His work. She was actively involved in the educational programs of the church. She was a charter member of Heritage Baptist Church in Farmville.

She loved sewing and was accomplished at all types of needlework. Another of Nannie's great loves was gardening. Of all the azaleas, tulips, daffodils, iris and more in her garden, her favorite flower was always the pink rose. In recent years, Nannie was known to many as the “doll lady,” for her collection of over 400 dolls.

She is survived by four children, Nancy Lee Webster Blanton, married to Joseph of Clearwater, FL; Emmett Graham Webster Jr., married to Jane of New Holland, PA; Janice Wood of Cadwallader, married to Cecil of Aiken, SC; Wayne Wood, married to Mary Jane of Charlottesville; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Her youngest sister, Vivian “Vic” Roop of Crewe, also survives.

Friends and family will be received at Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville, on Thursday, Feb. 19, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

A funeral service in celebration of Nannie's life will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Heritage Baptist Church, 700 Milnwood Road, Farmville. Interment will be in the Westview Cemetery immediately following the service.
