Mary “Charlie” Layne Farmville Resident Dies November 14

NOVEMBER 17 Mary Charles McMackin Layne, known to many as “Charlie,” died on Saturday, November 14, 2009 in Farmville. She was born October 8, 1921 in Dyer County, Tennessee to Charles C. and Addie McMackin.
She was educated in the Lawrenceburg, Tennessee school system, and after the beginning of World War II was recruited to serve in the stenographic corps of the Pentagon. After the war, she lived in Cumberland County, and in Farmville, where she worked for the Virginia Employment Commission, the Virginia Forestry Service, and the Art Department of Longwood College.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas N. Layne Jr.
She is survived by a son, Dr. Michael S. Forbes and daughter-in-law, Janie A. Forbes of Cumberland County; stepson, Dr. Thomas N. Layne III of Winchester; stepson-in-law, Don T. Morton of Fluvanna County, two grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter; her devoted friends, Lester Augustin of Wichita, Kansas, and Mrs. W. W. Summitt of Farmville.
A memorial service will be held at a later time to be announced.
Contributions in her memory be made to the Prince Edward County Rescue Squad or the Hospice of the Hills.
