DILLWYN, Sept. 29 – Johnnie Clyde Smelcer, 96, of Dillwyn, formerly of New Canton, died Friday, September 25, 2009. He was the son of Lafayette “Fate” Smelcer and Alice “Ollie” Smelcer. He was born May 25, 1913 in Sevierville, TN.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna McCarter Smelcer and their daughter, Billie S. Franck; son-in-law, C.A. (Blinky) Jones Jr.; and a wife of the past 20 years, Anne Jones Silsby Smelcer.

He is survived by a son, Johnnie W. (Pete) Smelcer and wife, Betty, and a daughter, Mildred S. Jones all of New Canton; five grandchildren, Roxanne J. Stinson and husband, James, Dianne J. Daly and husband, James both of New Canton, Donald R. Smelcer and wife, Penny of Apex, NC, Bonnie S. Scott and husband, Andy of Goochland, and Kimberly F. Etter of White Plains, MD; nine great-grandchildren, Stacy Stinson Hartless, Steven Stinson, Matthews, Jason and Starr Daly, Cody Scott, Mark Smelcer, and Hannah and Elliott Etter; five great-great-grandchildren, Camryn and Treyson Hartless, Zoee and Gabe Stinson, and McKenzie Daly.

Graveside funeral services were conducted September 27 at Buckingham Baptist Church, New Canton, officiated by the Rev. Richard Long.

Colbert Funeral Home, Bremo Bluff, was in charge of arrangements.
