“Bill” Hunter, 86 Retired Banker Dies Monday

SEPTEMBER 3 – William Allen Hunter, Sr., 86, of Appomattox, died Monday, August 31, 2009 at his residence. He was the son of Walter Davis Hunter and Mabel Pugh Hunter.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Frances Anne Ramsey Hunter; a son, William Allen Hunter Jr. and wife, Muriel, of Forest; two daughters, Martha Elzie Hunter of Richmond and Charlotte Leslie Hunter Pearce and husband, Kenneth of Chapel Hill, NC; seven grand-sons; one granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Hunter was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret H. Watson and Elizabeth H. Hamilton; four brothers, John, Walter, Frank and Robert Hunter.

He was a member of Concord Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon, elder and treasurer and was a 1951 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College. He served in World War II as a member of the 15th Air Force, flying 50 combat missions as a nose gunner on a B-24 Liberator Bomber.

Mr. Hunter served as president and C.E.O. of The Farmers Bank of Appomattox from 1979 until his retirement in 1986.

Funeral services were held Thursday at Concord Presbyterian Church with burial in the church cemetery, with military rites accorded by American Legion Post #104 and VFW #9855 combined honor guard.
