Alice Saunders, 91 Of Farmville Dies October 3

OCTOBER 13 – Alice Mae Saunders, 91, departed this life on Saturday, October 3, 2009. Born July 27, 1918 in Appomattox, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Francis Saunders. She was the ninth of nine children, five sisters and three brothers.

Alice, affectionately known as “Shayar” or “Shug” was very dedicated to her family and friends. She fed all that came to visit and those that could not come to visit she would send them food. All that knew her know that she was a pleasure to be around.

Alice worked at Longwood College for 33 years, retiring in 1980.

She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving and devoted son, Robert Saunders Sr. (Myrtle); loving and devoted daughter, Emma S. Reid; six grand-children, Frances Smith (David), Keith Gilliam (Sharon), Claudia Stokes (Nathaniel), Robert Saunders Jr. (Demetria), Alicia S. White (Lewis), Steve Carter (Cheryl); great grandchildren, Candace, Brandon, Marcus, Ariel, Chantel, Ajah, Kajah, Azure, Erik, Derek, Renee, Briana, and Jennifer; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceding her in death were two children, five sisters and three brothers, a son-in-law, and a great-grandson.

Bland-Reid Funeral Home, Farmville, served the family.
