World War II Veteran Howard L. Allen Dies In Lynchburg

March 30 – Deacon Emeritus Howard L. Allen entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 in Lynchburg at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was born August 26, 1915 in Nash County, NC, to Sanford and Irene Allen.
He was married 67 years to Dorothy G. Allen and they were the parents of two children, Howard L. Allen Jr. and Carolyn Irene Allen (Cooper). He is pre-deceased by both his wife and son.
“Jack” as he is known, is a veteran of World War II. In 1997 he retired from the Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock. He lived in Newport News from 1941 until 2007, when his health began to fail and he moved to Farmville with his daughter.
He is survived by a devoted daughter, Carolyn Cooper of Farmville; granddaughter, Chandra C. Herring of Charlotte, NC; two great-grandsons, Xavier and Drew Herring of Charlotte, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Funeral services were held March 29 at Zion Baptist Church, Newport News. Interment followed in the Hampton Memorial Gardens.
