Lowell Williams, 86 USN, Ret. Dies April 1

BUCKINGHAM, April 6 – CWO, W-4, Lowell Kenneth Williams, USN, Ret., 86, of Buckingham, died Thursday, April 1, 2010.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Rudelle; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Sam Cameron of Buckingham; daughter, Bonnie Jo Williams of Elizabethtown, KY; granddaughter and husband, Lynn and Nelson Justice of Copperas Cove, TX; granddaughter, Kara Cameron of Buckingham; great-grandson, Kenneth Trey Justice of Copperas Cove, TX; sister, Jeanette Drane of Hardinsburg, KY; many nieces and nephews; and devoted friend, Eddie Barton of Buckingham.

He was born in Seeree, KY and was preceded in death by his parents, Lura and Ward; brothers, Marion and Phillip; and sister, Eleanor.

Mr. Williams joined the Navy at the age of 17 to fight in WWII. He was a member of the Navy's elite Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) where he received a bronze star for heroism under battle. As a member of Frogman Teams 11 and 21, he went on to represent the Navy on several television shows, is cited in books on naval history for his accomplishments, and appears in the movie, “Frogmen”.

He retired to Buckingham County after 33 years of serving his country.

A memorial will be held in Ft. Pierce, FL, where his ashes will be scattered by former team-mates and members of the USN SEAL teams.
