Bird Club to go over Highland trip

The Margaret Watson Bird Club (MWBC) will hold their next meeting on Thursday, Sept. 5, highlighting a recent trip.

David Spears will present the highlights and photos from the MWBC trip to Highland County back in May. A group of 15 members explored sites in the BlueGrass area over 3 days and counted 102 species. Some of the highlights were many Chestnut-sided Warblers, the Least Flycatcher, a Ruffed Grouse at the edge of the road, six Spotted Sandpipers flying over rivers and great looks at the marvelous antics of the Bobolink. Additionally, we observed 17 species of Warblers, 7 species of Flycatchers, 3 Sandhill Cranes (flyovers) and both the Yellow-billed and Black-billed Cuckoo. Several members worked hard to photograph our sightings, and we all explored gorgeous grassy knolls, deep forests, and swampy river basins in pursuit of birds.

David Spears is an extraordinary and well-known birder across the state (former Virginia State Geologist) and founding member of the MWBC.

The meeting will be held at the Prince Edward County Extension Office at 100 Dominion Drive, across from Lowe’s in Farmville. Light refreshments start at 6:30 pm and the program starts at 7. A short business meeting will follow the free program.
