He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Norma Gibbons, and preceded in death by sister, Florence Dexter; brother, Ted Gibbons and nephews, Bruce Dexter and Charles Saunders. 

He is survived by nephews and nieces, Dianne Debuty (Florida), Todd Dexter (Texas), Kathy Landen (North Carolina), Jim (Sandy) Saunders, Mary (Floyd) Childress and Robert ( Rebecca) Blanton. He is survived by great nieces and nephews, Beth Childress and Micheal Blanton, Bill, John and Bob Gibbins, Dave Saunders, Carrie Saunders and Jenn Ward.

Dr. Gibbons earned his bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the College of William and Mary and his doctorate in public school education administration from UVA. He was an elementary school teacher in Williamsburg and Sarasota, Florida and an elementary school principal in Newport News and Fairfax. He taught at Longwood (College) University from 1969-1997 and served as the Coordinator of Student Teaching and Field Services. and then became Chair of the Department of Education, Special Education, Social Work, Speech Pathology and Nursery School. He was past president of the Longwood College Faculty, Farmville Exchange Club, Virginia State Reading Association and the Brandermill Region Men’s Club. He was active as a Chesterfield County Court Appointed Special Advocate, the Brandermill Community Association Board of Directors, a volunteer at St. Francis Medical Center and the Brandermill Church.

Family and Friends are invited to Crewe Cemetery for graveside funeral March 8, at 1 p.m.
