Trents Mill News: Just remember that a clock change is coming

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Time to talk about some news in Trents Mill. They say the main purpose of Daylight Saving Time is to make better use of daylight. We turn our clocks during the spring and summer months to move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. It’s nice especially for those summer nights where you can take a walk down the road a bit and visit with neighbors. But now, it’s almost time to give that hour back.

On Nov. 6, it’ll be time to switch from Eastern Daylight Time to Eastern Standard Time. That means at 2 a.m., clocks will “fall back” one hour. And yes, you may get an extra hour of sleep in that bargain.

This week, we send out birthday wishes to the following people. Happy birthday to Donna Miles of Cumberland on Friday, Oct. 28; Glady Shumaker of Richmond and Anna Garrett of Farmville, both on Saturday, Oct. 29; Rodney Ownby of Dillwyn on Tuesday, Nov. 1 and Luther Waycaster of Dillwyn on Wednesday, Nov. 2.

There is also some sad news to mention, as Buckingham Baptist Church won’t be having their Trunk or Treat event as planned. The church, located at 24234 N. James Madison Highway in the Gold Hill area, has canceled the event, originally scheduled for Monday, Oct. 31, due to circumstances beyond their control.

But not all of our local fall events are canceled. Calvary Christian School, located at 31139 N. James Madison Highway in New Canton will hold a fall festival on Saturday, Oct. 29. That’ll run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. with games, food and fun. There will also be a silent auction and Trunk or Treat for the kids.

Speaking of Calvary Christian, if you drop by there on Saturday, be sure to stay for the Terror Trail. The Bremo Screamo Terror Trail will be up and running on Saturday, at a cost of $10 per person to walk through. Gates open at 7 p.m. and close at 9:30 p.m. This is for ages 13 and up.

Meanwhile, Cedar Baptist Church, located at 3932 Bell Road in Dillwyn, will host their annual drive-thru Trunk or Treat event on Monday, Oct. 31 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

And now it’s still October this week, but it’s time to start thinking about Thanksgiving. The Buckingham County Christian Fellowship Association will host their annual Thanksgiving Banquet on Saturday, Nov. 5. That’ll be at 1 p.m. at the VFW Hall, located at 14405 W. James Anderson Highway in Buckingham.

This year’s banquet will be catered for all those who are in attendance.  All members are covered, but any and all guests attending will be $16 per person. Following this, there will be special guest Smokey Wilson singing southern gospel music at its best. There will also be door prizes. For further information contact President Barry Miles at 804-492-5806 or 434-315-4181.

Finally, the Cumberland County Landfill Alert Committee, a non-profit organization, will be hosting their regular monthly meeting on Sunday, Nov. 13. That’ll happen at 3 p.m. at 71 Community Center Drive in Cumberland. The continued purpose of these meetings is to inform Cumberland County residents and surrounding counties about the serious impact this Mega Landfill will have on you and your neighbors giving you the most current update.

And as always, our thoughts and prayers go out this week to the sick and shut in everywhere.
