Senior captain Trey Karnes had two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs, and freshman Christian Chambersalso had two hits, including a home run, in the first game, while freshman Christian Lancaster had three hits and three RBIs, and junior Tymothy Hart added a home run in the second game, as Hampden-Sydney College swept an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader on the road at Guilford (NC) College on Saturday afternoon in Greensboro, North Carolina. Sophomore Ryan Portes gained the pitching victory in relief in the 10-5 win in the opener, and junior Owen Tappy earned the save, while junior Justin Woodall (Mechanicsville) took the mound triumph in the 10-1 win in the nightcap for the visiting Tigers (14-5, 7-2)-winners of eight-straight games-against the host Quakers (4-13, 0-6).

In game one, H-SC scored 10 runs on 12 hits with two errors … scoring two runs in the second inning, one run in the third, two runs in the fifth, one run in the decisive seventh and four runs in the eighth. GC scored five runs on seven hits with five errors … scoring two runs in the fourth inning, and three runs in the sixth.

Highlights for the Tigers in the opener included Karnes (2-5, 4 RBIs) with his two-run home runs in the fifth as well as RBIs in both the third and eighth innings, along with a solo home run in the seventh by Chambers (2-4, RBI) that proved to be the game-winner. It was the first homer of the season for Karnes, and the third this spring by Chambers-tying him for the team lead. Freshman Johnny Oates II (RBI) provided a sacrifice fly RBI in the second to get things started, while sophomore Lucas Burnette (RBI) added a ground ball RBI in the eighth, and senior Ethan Badin (1-4, RBI) contributed a run-scoring single in the eighth. Junior captain Ryan Boyce (3-5) and freshman Matthew Arnold (3-5) each collected three hits in game one for the Garnet & Grey.

Portes (3-0) recorded the final out of the sixth inning for the win, yielding one hit with no strikeouts and one walk. Tappy (1) gained his first collegiate save with the final 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits with one strikeout and no walks. Senior Nic Graziano started and pitched the first 5.2 innings, scattering four hits and five runs, four earned, with five strikeouts and four walks.

In game two, H-SC scored 10 runs on 15 hits with one error … scoring four runs in the third inning, one run in the fifth, two runs in the sixth, one run in the seventh and two runs in the ninth. GC scored one run on five hits with two errors … scoring its lone run in the fifth inning.

Highlights for the Tigers in the nightcap included Lancaster (3-4, 3 RBIs) with a two-run single in the third and an RBI single in the seventh, as well as a two-run home run in the sixth by Hart (1-3, 2 RBIs). It was the first collegiate home run for Hart. Oates (2-3, 2 RBIs) added a sac fly RBI in the third and a run-scoring double in the fifth, while Arnold (3-4, RBI) had an RBI single in the third, Boyce (1-4, RBI) had a run-scoring double in the ninth and Burnette (2-4, RBI) added an RBI single in the ninth. Badin (2-5) collected two hits in the second game.

Woodall (1-0) started and pitched the first 5.0 solid innings for the win, allowing just two hits and one run, earned, with four strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Lance Tate was among four pitchers in game two, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with three strikeouts and one walk.

H-SC will host nationally-ranked No. 4 the University of Lynchburg in ODAC action on Tuesday, March 29, at 3:30 p.m. on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
