Students attend livestock judging competition

Cumberland High School (CHS) FFA students attended the Block and Bridle Livestock Judging Competition at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The Senior Team included Erika Davis, Sarah Elizabeth Jackson, Johnna Stevens and Celeste Mitchell.

The Senior Team finished 17th overall with a team score of 1,138. Sarah Elizabeth Jackson finished seventh highest in the individual beef cattle judging and 10th overall with an individual score of 425 out of 500 possible points.

CHS FFA had a Junior team composed of the eighth graders William Fleenor, Tucker Bowman, Jolene Mitchell, Kaitlynne Kelsey and John David Mitchell.

The Junior team finished 12th with a score of 1,087. John David Mitchell had the second highest individual score of the individual in the competition.

The CHS FFA students not only competed, they also toured the horticulture gardens, greenhouses and the campus of Virginia Tech. They were coached by their advisor Joshua L. Fleenor, who stated that he is “very proud of each and everyone of his team members and their accomplishments. This has been the best showing of a CHS FFA livestock judging team in quite some time” and he and his students are “looking forward to next year’s competition already.”
