The Town of Farmville will observe Arbor Day on Saturday, March 26, by giving away free tree seedlings. This will take place at the Farmer’s Market building located on North Street from 9 a.m. until noon or until the seedlings are gone. The bare-root trees being offered this year are Red Maple and Norway Spruce. Red Maples are fast growing and provide excellent shade. Norway Spruce is a species commonly grown for Christmas trees and can reach heights in excess of 40ft. The Town purchased the tree seedlings from the Virginia Department of Forestry.
Each year the Town is assisted by the Heart of Virginia Master Gardeners and the Boy Scouts of America. Both organizations offer critical help in the packaging of the seedlings and providing information on planting and care of the young trees.
Farmville has continued to meet the requirements set forth by the Arbor Day Foundation and is celebrating its 16th year as a Tree City USA. Trees play a vital role in our community by providing shade, habitat for wildlife and beauty to our neighborhoods. As we honor Arbor Day, it is our hope that you join us at the Farmer’s Market and take home a new tree of your own.
