The Piedmont Soil and Water Conservation District participated in the national education campaign “Imagine A Day Without Water” by holding an essay contest. All middle school students from Amelia, Nottoway and Prince Edward counties were invited to participate. Students were challenged to imagine a day without water while composing a 350-500 word essay. All essays were scored by a panel of district judges using a pre-designed rubric. Students wrote of a dried-up ocean, pipes that flowed with only air, extreme thirst and hunger. First, second and third place winners received a certificate and other prizes. All three winners received a copy of the book “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park. First, second and third place winners are Caroline Martin, first place, Collins Easter, second place and Marielle Smith, third place. Martin is a seventh grader at Fuqua School. Easter is a sixth grader at Fuqua School. Smith is a fifth grader at Amelia Academy.
