Tillett receives national Division I coaching honor

After the Longwood University women’s basketball team’s dominant win over Big South Conference rival Gardner-Webb University that extended Longwood’s winning streak to three games, Women’s Hoop Dirt selected Lancers Head Coach Rebecca Tillett, pictured above, as the National Coach of the Week, the site announced Tuesday, Dec. 31, according to a Longwood Athletics press release. Presented by Pivot Analysis, the WHoopDirt.com Coach of the Week awards recognize one coach from each level of college basketball. Tillett was the Division I representative, becoming the first Big South coach to receive the recognition this season and joining a crop of six other Division I head coaches that earned the award this season, including South Carolina’s Dawn Staley, Texas A&M’s Gary Blair and Texas’ Karen Alston. Longwood’s win against Gardner-Webb improved the Lancers to 4-1 at home and 5-5 overall in Tillett’s second season leading the program. Longwood finished 3-27 overall last season. The Lancers return to action for their first game of the new year on Saturday, Jan. 5, when they visit Winthrop University at 2 p.m.
