Buckingham County Solid Waste is seeking bids for a new collection site to replace an old site located at Gravel Hill. According to Solid Waste Supervisor Lyn Hill, the new location will be a much-welcomed improvement that will benefit Buckingham residents and possibly provide more revenue to the county.

“It’s going to be a somewhat new site. It’s going right across from an old one,” said Hill. He explained that the old Gravel Hill site is located on a piece of property that doesn’t belong to the county.

“That is our worst site that we have,” he stated. “It’s been that way for a long time. We have people from other counties that use that site quite a bit, and it costs us money for other people to use that site. There’s a lot of illegal dumping going on there that shouldn’t be going on, not just with people from other counties, but also things that aren’t supposed to be (dumped) there are there.”

Hill elaborated that individuals from Cumberland or Fluvanna counties often dump waste at the old site. “And we have a lot of people from Buckingham using that county site that haven’t paid for their county stickers, which means probably they haven’t paid their county taxes.”

According to Hill, the new site will only be usable to Buckingham County residents with county stickers permitting disposal. He anticipated that the site will be open and available to use by May “provided that we have good weather.”

“It’s something that we’ve been trying to get done for a long time,” said Hill in reference to the new site. “It ought to bring in some more revenue for the county as well. It should get some stickers bought and county taxes paid.”

The new collection site will be located 4.2 miles north of the Town of Dillwyn on Rt. 15 North in Buckingham County. A pre-bid conference will be held Jan. 17 at 1 p.m. at the site.
