For the second time in program history, Longwood University’s women’s basketball program will begin Big South Conference play 2-0 after defeating Presbyterian College on the road Saturday, Jan. 4, 71-60, a Longwood Athletics press release stated.

Officials noted in the release that Longwood leaned on senior Dayna Rouse and freshman Kyla McMakin offensively against the Blue Hose. The duo combined for 36 of Longwood’s 71 points in the victory, with Rouse leading the way with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the court.

“I think our women came out in the first quarter, and we felt really good about our game plan and what we were doing,” Lancers Head Coach Rebecca Tillett said in the release. “Then Presbyterian made a great run in the second and the third quarter, so credit to them for their fight. We saw that on film, they have gotten down before, but they never quit. We wanted our women to pack their toughness and chemistry and take it on the road. We felt like we did that against (University of Maryland Eastern Shore), but our chemistry could be even better, and I thought our women accomplished that today.”

After Longwood (6-5, 2-0 Big South) hosted Campbell University on Monday, the Lancers host Charleston Southern University on Thursday at 7 p.m.
