William Franklin Woodson

William Franklin Woodson, 92, of New Canton died December 22, 2019. He was born November 1, 1927 in Buckingham County, a son of the late William Emmett Woodson and the late Ella Toney Fisher. He was the devoted husband of Lou Ellen Dunivan Woodson for 69 years.

William was a devoted member of Buckingham Baptist Church and served in numerous positions including: Honorary Trustee, Chairman of Deacons, Sunday School Superintendent, teacher and Royal Ambassadors Leader. He also served on numerous committees including the cemetery committee. William’s knowledge of Buckingham Baptist was so expansive he could be considered a church historian.

William and Lou Ellen, along with Ruth and Marty Martin, were managers of Riverside Restaurant in the early 1950’s. Later he ran a local service station with his brother Glover & Acie Thomas. He eventually settled in with VEPCO, and after 29 years of employment he retired as a first class electrician.

William was a generous man, who willingly shared his time and talents with others. Anytime he received a call from someone in need of a helping hand with home repairs, plumbing, or electrical problems he was quick to respond. He and Lou Ellen opened their home and hearts to make sure that all who entered knew they were welcome and had plenty to eat.

William is survived by his wife, Lou Ellen Woodson; daughter, Brenda Woodson Hamby (Mike); son, Roger Keith Woodson; four grandchildren, Clint Hamby (Jennifer), Jennifer Duty (Jeff), Derek Woodson and Chad Woodson; three great-grandchildren, Clay Allen-Hamby, Annalee Duty and James Duty; two step-grandchildren, Nathan Parks and Audrey Parks; two special family members, Rusty Branch and Natalie Hintz; sister, Edith Evans; sister-in-law, Susan Woodson and brother-in-law, Howard Dunivan and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Walter Richardson Woodson and Willis Glover Woodson and grandson, Scott Hamby.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 27, at 3 p.m. at Buckingham Baptist Church, Gold Hill, with interment in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
