Tigers sophomore Jack Wyatt scored 16 points, and senior captain Kevin Quinn added 15 points, but Hampden-Sydney College’s (H-SC) men’s basketball team dropped an 81-60 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball decision on the road at Washington and Lee University (W&L) on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 1, in Lexington, a H-SC Athletics press release stated. The visiting Tigers trailed just 33-32 at halftime before the host Generals (5-2, 1-1) pulled away during the second half. W&L was led by Richie Manigault with a game-high 22 points, including four three-point field goals.

Officials noted in the release that H-SC fell behind 4-0 to start before answering with a 10-4 run to lead 10-8 at the 16-minute, 6-second mark as junior captain Jake Hahn scored eight quick points. W&L answered back with eight straight points to lead 16-10 at 11:18, but freshman Ryan Clements scored on a jumper at 11:06 and classmate Chase Turner added a layup at 10:13 to make it 16-14. The Generals took their largest lead of the opening half at 28-19 with 6:22 remaining, but the Tigers closed the half strong with a 13-5 run to get within 33-32 at the intermission. The visitors actually led 32-30 at 1:15 following a three-pointer by Clements, while Wyatt scored seven points during the late outburst, and Quinn added a three-pointer, as well.

H-SC trailed 40-38 early in the second half with 16:19 remaining after a jumper by Hahn, the release continued. W&L, however, used a 13-2 run to lead 53-40 at 11:48, and the Generals maintained a comfortable advantage the rest of the way. The Tigers did get to within 55-48 with 10:08 left to play following a steal by Turner that led to a basket by Wyatt, but Manigault responded with consecutive three-pointers to push the lead to 61-48 at the 9:11 mark. The margin was never less than 13 points over the final 6:48 of the contest.

Wyatt led H-SC with his 16 points, adding eight rebounds, the release highlighted. Quinn finished with 15 points off the bench, including a trio of three-pointers, adding five rebounds for the Tigers. Hahn and Clements each contributed 12 points, with Hahn adding seven rebounds and three assists, and Clements adding five rebounds and three steals. Turner had career-highs of three points, seven rebounds, five steals, two assists and one block. H-SC shot 32% (23-for-72) from the field, including 24% (4-for-17) on three-pointers and 63% (10-for-16) at the free throw line.

Manigault led W&L with his game-high 22 points, including hitting 4-of-7 three-point attempts, officials cited in the release. Curtis Mitchell finished with a double-double of 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, adding a game-high four blocks for the Generals. W&L shot 38% (26-for-69) from the field, including 27% (9-for-33) on three-pointers and 91% (20-for-22) at the line.

The release concluded by noting that H-SC (1-5, 0-1) remains on the road to play a non-conference contest at St. Mary’s College of Maryland on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. in St. Mary’s City, Maryland.
