Knights improve to 5-0 on season

Buckingham County High School’s (BCHS) varsity boys basketball team defeated host Madison County High School on Wednesday night, Dec. 18, 50-24 to push its overall record to 5-0 for the 2019 season.

“The Knights outscored the Mountaineers 22-3 in the second half,” Buckingham Head Coach Taylor Boyers said.

Leading the way for the Knights statistically was senior center James DeVore, who finished with a double-double — 12 points and 12 rebounds. Junior forward Gerry “Tae” Toney matched his team-high in point, contributing a dozen of his own.

In the “Battle of Route 60” on Tuesday, Dec. 17, Buckingham routed visiting Cumberland County High School 62-41.

Knights junior guard Amari Toney produced a game-high 17 points, while sophomore guard Damorrious Holman had 13 points, and Toney contributed 12 points and eight boards.

Buckingham’s first showdown this season against Madison came Dec. 11 at home when the Knights prevailed 58-29.

Toney recorded a double-double of his own in that game, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Damarius Reed came off the bench to produce 12 points.

Buckingham visits Randolph-Henry High School on Friday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m.

Then Buckingham will be holding its first Christmas basketball tournament in more than 15 years on Dec. 27-28.

The BCHS Holiday Classic will feature four teams: Appomattox County High School, Staunton River High School, William Campbell High School and Buckingham.

On Friday, Dec. 27, Staunton River will face Appomattox at 6 p.m., and William Campbell will face Buckingham at 8 p.m.
