John Marvin ‘Jack’ Austin

John Marvin “Jack” Austin, 84, of Farmville, Va. died Friday, December 13, 2019 at his residence. He was the loving husband of Edith Ann Carter Austin.

Jack was born April 1, 1935 to the late Katie Kidd and Marvin Blackwell Austin. In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by his two daughters; Katherine Marie Austin of Farmville, Va. and Ann Carter Austin Swanberg and her husband, Bobby of Appomattox, Va. and three grandchildren; Abigail, Carter and Mason Swanberg.

Jack was a fourth generation Longwood University graduate and went on to receive his M.Ed. from the University of Virginia. He also completed graduate course work at Duke University and doctoral course work at the University of Virginia. He retired from Longwood University in 1999 after teaching science for 36 years.

Jack loved God and served as a Deacon at Farmville Baptist Church and as a Trustee of the Smyrna United Methodist Church Cemetery. He served his community as a member of the Farmville Lion’s Club. He was an amateur radio enthusiast and was a member of the Virginia Fone Net and American Radio Relay League. He was also a member of the Margaret Watson Bird Club and the Norfolk and Western Historical Society.

The family received friends from 3-5 pm on Sunday, December 15, at Puckett Funeral Home and at other times at the residence. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 16, at Farmville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Kiehm officiating.
