Tigers’ soccer season concludes in ODAC semifinals

The top-seeded Hampden-Sydney College (H-SC) soccer team battled to a 2-2 double-overtime tie against fourth-seeded University of Lynchburg in the semifinals of the 2019 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship at Hellmuth-Gibson Field on Friday evening, Nov. 8, a H-SC Athletics press release cited. Unfortunately, the Hornets advanced to the ODAC Championship contest on penalty kicks, 4-3.

The Tigers conclude their season with a final record of 13-5-2, including a school-record 14-match unbeaten streak, officials stated in the release.

After two scoreless overtime periods, the advancing team had to be decided on penalty kicks (PK), the release noted. Both teams scored on their first attempt. Lynchburg saved both of the Tigers’ next two attempts, while scoring both of theirs for a 3-1 advantage on PKs.

H-SC scored its next two while holding off the Hornets’ fourth shot to even up the PKs at 3-3. Lynchburg was able to find the corner of the net on its last attempt to advance to the ODAC Championship game.

The Hornets fell in the title game 1-0 to No. 11 Washington and Lee University on Saturday, Nov. 9.
