Thanksgiving celebrations

Fitzgerald Baptist Church of Cumberland will be hosting a community Thanksgiving service on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Come and enjoy “Lights at The Park” at Bear Creek Lake State Park located at 22 Bear Creek Lake Road, Cumberland, for a drive through light show on the weekends of Dec. 6-8 and 13-15 from 5-7:30 p.m. Admission fees will be waived with a new unwrapped toy or monetary donation to benefit Cumberland Christmas Mother. Activities on Saturday, Dec. 7 and 14 include s’mores and cocoa from 5-7:30 p.m. at Bear Creek Hall. S’mores kits available for a nominal donation. On Sunday, Dec. 8 a pancake supper with Santa from 5-7:30 p.m. at Bear Creek Hall for a donation. There will also be ornaments for sale.

Special happy anniversary wishes go out this week to James and Virginia Boyles of Cumberland who will be celebrating 66 years of marriage on Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Cumberland County Landfill Alert Committee will be hosting its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 3 p.m. at the Cumberland Community Center located at 45 South and Davenport Road in Cumberland. The purpose of this meeting is to inform Cumberland County residents and surrounding counties with updated information as to why this mega landfill will be detrimental to everyone. All are welcome.

Happy birthday wishes go out this week to the following people: Stephanie Marion of Cumberland on Friday, Nov. 22, Barbara Heifner of Dillwyn on Monday, Nov. 25 and Jacksyn Waycaster of Powhatan on Thursday, Nov. 28.

The Cumberland County Board of Supervisors monthly meeting is held every second Tuesday unless otherwise announced at 7 p.m. in the Cumberland County courtroom.

Browns Chapel United Methodist Church located U.S. route 15 North of Dillwyn on state route 617 Gravel Hill Road of Dillwyn, will be hosting their annual Thanksgiving supper and program on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 5 p.m. Pastor Evelyn Penn and the entire congregation welcomes all to attend as we give thanks for all good things cometh from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Cedar Baptist Church located 3932 Bell Road Dillwyn, will be hosting their annual Thanksgiving fest and program on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 5p.m. Pastor Tommy Armstrong and congregation welcome all to attend.

A speedy recovery is sent out to all those who are sick and shut-in.

Buckingham Baptist Church located 24234 North James Madison Highway, Gold Hill area of New Canton, will be hosting its annual Thanksgiving Day celebration on Sunday, Nov. 24. The day will begin with Sunday School at 10 a.m., morning worship at 11 a.m. followed by a meal in the church fellowship hall. Pastor Anthony Sacco and congregation welcome all to attend as we thank God for all he has done.

Victory Baptist Church located 4339 Salem Road, Spout Springs, will be hosting its annual Christmas program on Sunday Dec. 8, at 6 p.m. and again on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. The title of the program will be “The Heavenly Visitor.” Also, the church will be having a live nativity on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13-14 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Pastor Jeff Worley and the entire congregation welcome all to attend.

There will be a Tony Mitchell chicken BBQ dinner fundraiser on Friday, Nov. 22 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Randolph Volunteer Fire Department, 2145 Cumberland Road, Farmville, to benefit baby Asher Pleasants from Buckingham, who was born on Sept. 12 at UVA Medical Center with a major congenital heart defect. Ashers’ pending surgery will require he and his family to travel to Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, California and stay for a period of up to four months for recovery. Menu to include, BBQ Chicken, slaw, baked beans, roll, drink and dessert. Come out and be one of “Asher’s Angels” and join his family in efforts to raise funds for medical and travel expenses. The Buckingham County Christian Fellowship Association will be hosting its annual Christmas banquet on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1 p.m. at the VFW Hall located on Route 60 at 14405 West James Anderson Highway, Buckingham. All members and their guests are welcome to attend and are asked to bring a covered dish with the meats and drinks furnished by the association. Following this will be door prizes, election of officers and the Rev. Billy Swan, guest speaker for devotional time. Reminder: Thanksgiving Day is Thursday, Nov. 28. Let us remember that not only on this day to always give thanks to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as he provides for us daily as all great and wonderful things come from him. From our house to yours have a great Thanksgiving.
