Knights hold off scrappy Cougars

Buckingham County High School’s varsity football team held off a highly competitive Nottoway High School football team Friday night, Nov. 8, as the Knights scored late to put the game away with a 29-14 final score in Crewe.

Buckingham is now 9-1 going into the first round of the Region 2B tourney. The No. 4-seeded Knights will host No. 7 Page County High School (7-3) on Friday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m.

Leading the Knights in a big way against the Cougars on Friday was junior Gerry “Tae” Toney, who recorded 20 carries for 268 yards and two touchdowns.

Two other key running threats asserted themselves for Buckingham, as junior Xavian Gough had eight carries for 95 yards and a touchdown, and junior Xavier Copeland had five carries for 49 yards and a score.

Both Gough and Copeland were also key standouts on defense; Gough registered 10 tackles, and Copeland grabbed an interception.

Senior Nathan Brickhill and freshman Martrell Glover contributed five tackles apiece.
