Cumberland County High School’s varsity football team trailed 20-0 at the half against host Randolph-Henry High School on Friday, and the Dukes fought back in the second half, producing their highest point total yet in a game this season, but the Statesmen ultimately earned their first win this year by defeating the Dukes with a 26-8 final score.

“It was the best we played all year, actually,” Cumberland Head Coach Howard Paras said. “We did a really good job of stopping the run. We had three busted coverages — two in the first quarter, one in the fourth quarter — which all led to touchdowns, but other than that, we played really well.”

Dukes senior quarterback Jordan Newman threw both a touchdown pass and a successful two-point conversion pass to sophomore Mario Carter. Newman also ran for 75 yards on eight carries.
