As part of a recent five-day state park tour, Gov. Ralph Northam visited Twin Lakes on Sept. 28 where he highlighted outdoor opportunities and support for Virginia’s thriving outdoor recreation industry.

“Virginia is home to a wealth of public lands that provide outdoor recreation opportunities, protect and preserve our diverse natural resources, serve as an important economic engine and contribute to our outstanding quality of life,” said Northam. “On our tour, I met some of the state employees, volunteers and businesses that contribute to our thriving outdoor economy.”

Cameron Patterson, managing director of the Robert Russa Moton Museum, and Cainan Townsend, director of education & public programs with the Robert Russa Moton Museum, joined with the governor during his visit to Twin Lakes.

“It was an honor to join with Gov. Northam, DCR Director Clyde Christman, and Twin Lakes State Park to recognize and celebrate the value that our state parks add across the commonwealth,” said Patterson. “Moton enjoys a rich partnership with Twin Lakes State Park as we both work to advance the civil rights history of Prince Edward County, Virginia.”

In July, the governor created a new office of outdoor recreation to promote the industry, according to Alena Yarmosky, press secretary to the governor “The governor continues to explore ways we can boost tourism and increase access to Virginia’s beautiful public lands,” she said.”

Outdoor recreation is a key driver for Virginia’s economy, contributing nearly $22 billion annually and supporting 197,000 jobs.

“Each year millions of Virginians use state parks to pursue their outdoor recreation passions and to appreciate the paramount beauty of the natural resources of the commonwealth,” said Director of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation Clyde Cristman. “We thank Gov. Northam for his commitment to both promoting the benefits of outdoor recreation while moving forward with strategic and forward-thinking actions that protect Virginia’s natural landscapes and environment for future generations.”
