The Cumberland County Landfill Alert (CCLA) is preparing to hold a “shindig” fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 12. The fundraiser will be held 5-9 p.m. at the Community Center at 11 Davenport Road in Cumberland.

CCLA Co-Chair Betty Rankin explained that money raised at the fundraiser will go mostly toward legal fees involving the group’s opposition to the proposed Green Ridge landfill, known formally as the Green Ridge Recycling and Disposal Facility.

“The really simple thing that we’re raising the money for is that currently we have two attorneys that we are working with,” Rankin said. “Naturally, they are charging us, so the bulk of whatever we collect or what we get in is going toward legal things.”

Rankin added that the event will have a variety of features and activities including music, barbecue, a raffle and a silent auction.

“We’re going to have a DJ,” Rankin said. “He’s going to be playing a variety of music. We’ll probably have a cake walk or two. We’ll have the silent auction, and with that we can take either a check or cash for those items, and they have some really nice items coming up.”

CCLA is still accepting item donations for its silent auction. Rankin added that the group would prefer to receive any donated items ahead of time so as to keep the items organized.

In addition to the silent auction at the fundraiser, CCLA is holding a raffle with prizes that include a $100 gift card for a Virginia state park and a $50 Visa gift card.

Rankin stated that attendees can sign a petition against the landfill at the event. She also noted that the group will be at Powhatan’s Festival of the Grape on Saturday, Oct. 5, where citizens can sign the petition and discuss the landfill with members of CCLA.

In reference to members of the local community, Rankin said, “I think that we should ask for their support, because this is something that’s not going to only affect Cumberland County and Powhatan County, but it’s going to affect the whole state of Virginia. And it’s not just going to affect our generation now, but our future generation. We all need to be concerned with saving our environment.”
