Heading into the 2019-20 season, Longwood University’s athletics broadcasts operations are poised to take a significant step forward with a record number of broadcasts planned for the Big South Network on ESPN+, a Longwood athletics press released highlighted.
That increased streaming lineup begins in the fall with Longwood field hockey, men’s soccer and women’s soccer slated for a combined 31 broadcasts from August through November, including 27 from Longwood’s campus, officials cited in the release. Those games will air live on ESPN+, a subscription-based sports broadcast platform available on most streaming devices.
The release noted that women’s soccer kicks off coverage with a high-profile matchup against Atlantic 10 power Virginia Commonwealth University on Aug. 25. Other non-conference broadcasts include a matchup with University of North Carolina at Charlotte on Aug. 30 that serves as the culmination of Longwood’s annual Greatest Athletics March Ever (The G.A.M.E.) as well as September showdowns against Howard University on Sept. 2 and American University on Sept. 13.
Men’s soccer also features several high-profile, in-state matchups in the non-conference portion of their schedule, the release stated. The Lancers will host Virginia Military Institute on Sept. 11, perennial Colonial Athletic Association power James Madison University on Sept. 24 as well as George Mason University on Oct. 1.
Field hockey’s daunting non-conference schedule will feature exciting non-conference matchups throughout the season capped by a pair of games versus in-state foes, officials said in the release. On Sept. 29, the Lancers will host Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouse University of Virginia to close the month and shortly after will square off against a powerful Liberty University squad on Oct. 13 in a rematch of Longwood’s historic 2-1 win in 2018.
Plus, Lancer fans can catch Big South action for all three sports, the release cited.
Officials added that Longwood’s expanded broadcast schedule is in tandem with a conference-wide increase by all Big South schools. An unprecedented number of contests will be carried by each member institution on ESPN+ as part of the conference’s broadcast partnership with the worldwide leader in sports. Longwood will also broadcast every home men’s and women’s basketball game, along with an increased number of spring broadcasts for Lancer baseball, women’s lacrosse and softball. Those streaming lineups for winter and spring will be unveiled later in the fall.
