Book and bake sale for a cause

The Buckingham County Friends of the Library will host a Book and Bake Sale beginning on Friday, Aug. 30, from 4-8 p.m. and on Saturday Aug. 31, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. to raise money for the new library. This event will take place at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Hall at 14405 W. James Anderson Highway (Route 60) just west of U.S. Route 15. Delicious baked goods will be available and there will be a 50/50 drawing for those who are willing to test their luck. The 50/50 will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. There will be a wide assortment of books to choose from and many great desserts to take home and enjoy. As usual, your book donations can be accepted on Friday, Aug. 30, from 10 a.m.-noon at the VFW Hall.

The Family Nutrition Program (FNP) teaches limited resource families, individuals and youth to make healthier food choices and become better managers of available food resources for better health and growth. The FNP program reaches out to limited resource households receiving food stamps and those who are at 130 percent of poverty or below. If you qualify, there are free nutritional programs through Virginia Cooperative Extension. The program includes six free adult lessons for one hour each (one lesson a week), recipes, and the chance for free gifts during certain programs. Lessons can be done in your home or at the Buckingham or Cumberland Extension Offices. Participants will also receive a free newsletter that includes recipes, games, health and nutrition information. Holliday Lake 4-H Education Center is holding a Decoy Carving Workshop from Sept. 15-19. Learn to carve your own decoy or sharpen your carving skills. Beginners are welcome. Carving experience not needed. Instruction and kits provided by carver Ed Morrison. Register by Sept. 1. Workshop is limited to 15 participants for a better instructor participant ratio. Rustic but comfortable bunk style lodging. Linens not provided. A health form (no physical required), and other information will be sent upon receipt of registration form and payment.
