“Mr. Unmussig is a resident of Powhatan County and brings to Cumberland a wealth of experience in government,” the release cited. “He served with the Virginia National Guard for 30 years; has worked in state government with the Virginia Department of Forestry, the Virginia Department of General Services, the Virginia Department of Education, and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles; and has worked in local government with Loudoun County. Don holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama and a master’s degree in public administration from Clemson University.”

Unmussig retired in March as Chief Warrant Officer 5, Command Chief Warrant Officer for the Virginia Army National Guard.

Unmussig will succeed Vivian Seay Giles, county administrator and county attorney for Cumberland County.

He said in a statement Monday morning that he looks forward to bringing his experience at state departments to Cumberland.

“I am excited about the opportunity to serve the county, I feel that I bring experiences and skill sets that can enhance the county’s service to its citizens,” Unmussig said.

No action was taken regarding the county attorney position, according to county officials on Thursday.
