Unearthing the stones

Blue skies and hot temperatures were the right mix for rock enthusiasts on Saturday, July 13.
Scufflin Acres Farm, a former dairy farm in Prospect, hosted an open dig offering those who visited the chance to unearth their own precious stones.

According to owner Mary Simpson, she and her husband, Averette have been hosting mining events on their farm for the past 10 to 15 years with people from all over the world visiting. “They say there are not many places that are open to the public to dig anymore,” said Simpson. “People are welcome to come here and dig, and it’s amazing to see what they find.”
The farm is known to have lots of quartz, and amethyst ranging from smoky, to light and dark purple.
Those who took part in the weekend dig were finding mostly quartz and even some garnet.
