About 40 seniors from Buckingham, Cumberland and Prince Edward counties attended a unique field trip recently with Piedmont Senior Resources when they traveled to the James River State Park near Gladstone to learn the history of the James River and the batteau festival.
“The seniors had a really great time,” said Thomas Jordan Miles III, Director of Nutrition and Transportation. “They enjoyed a picnic lunch, a scenic ride through Buckingham, and even learned about the history of the area of the park and the James River from park interpreters and volunteers.”
Seniors had the opportunity to talk to operators and crewmembers of The Lady Slipper, a batteau boat that made it first to the James River State Park. Several others were behind them as part of the festival.
The clients are members of Friendship Cafes in the area, which includes weekly get togethers that feature a hot meal, games, exercise and occasional field trips.
