The Friends of the Barbara Rose Johns Farmville-Prince Edward Community Library held a poetry reading and reception in advance of its regularly scheduled board meeting July 8. The winners of the NEA Big Read Poetry Contest read their poems aloud to an appreciative crowd. The first place winner, Dr. Hood Frazier, read his poem “Tangier Island.” Second place winner, Dr. William Shear read his poem “James River;” and the third place winner, Katy Leslie read her poem “The Forgetting of Mrs. Winslow.” Each of the winners expressed their pleasure in taking part in the poetry contest and the hope that the contest would grow to become an annual event.
