On Saturday, June 15, the Friends of the Appomattox River (FAR) conducted a class on how to paddle canoes and kayaks. Instructors were Lee Woodruff and Tom Detrick, members of FAR who are experienced watermen. A picnic lunch followed a paddle on Wilck’s Lake. Earlier in the week, the Friends also sponsored a talk at the public library by local historian Bob Flippen on the history of the Appomattox River with pictures of the remnants of bridges, railroad trestles and villages no longer in existence. FAR promotes conservation, education, recreation and improved access of the river and surrounding waterways.
