“Dance with your heart and your feet will follow.” -Mia Michaels. This quote exemplifies the Ambition Dance Team, which just completed its third year. Parents recognize that affordable extracurriculars are difficult to find, especially extracurriculars in the arts. Art is an essential part of childhood development; it fosters emotional growth and creativity. It is important for children to get creative outlets whether it is music, dance, painting, etc. — children need those outlets.
While there are many opportunities for youth in our community to express themselves, not all of them are affordable for many households. The mission of the Ambition Dance Team is to break down the barrier of financial issues and say it doesn’t matter, just come dance with us.
This dance program cultivates structure, creativity and emotional openness. Youth learn an assortment of dance styles during the year, including ballet, jazz and lyrical. The studio holds one-hour classes once a week during the school year, where students practice new skills and learn a choreographed piece they later perform. This piece and the performance are vital to the curriculum. Students develop confidence and performance skills with these opportunities which go hand in hand with dance as an art. The Ambition Dance Team has performed at the nursing home, for other youth programs and at the Five Pointes Dance Recital. The children involved in the program are talented, hardworking and passionate.
The Ambition Dance Team promotes friendship, passion and hard work. It is an impactful program and offers much to all those involved. If you or someone you know has an interest in this program applications for the 2019-20 school year are available at Five Pointes Dance Center located at 1431 South Main St., Farmville. Summer hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 3:30-7:30 p.m. The program runs from September through May and is accepting rising second- through sixth-graders.
