One item of business on the April meeting agenda for the Farmville Town Council was under review by the Infrastructure Committee pending a public hearing held at the May 8 council meeting. Recommendation has also been made to notify all adjoining property owners ahead of any official decision.
Town Manager Gerald Spates confirmed that the council voted to abandon the parcel on May 8.
The specific item under consideration was the Town’s abandonment of a portion of Grove Street between Buffalo Street and the Longwood University pedestrian bridge, “…on behalf of St. Theresa Catholic Church,” according to the language written in the item of business for the April Town Council Meeting.
Spates explained that the reason for possibly abandoning a portion of Grove Street is to benefit parking for services held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, which has been the primary use of the portion of Grove Street under consideration.
The proposed area total provided for visualization on an amended tax map diagram delineates a portion of Grove Street that is 13 feet wide and 242 feet long.
“The parcel of Grove Street is not intended to be a gift,” according to Spates, although he did say, “It isn’t a huge amount of money.” The exact dollar amount of the assessed value of the Grove Street parcel was not discussed.
