Tigers win in Roanoke, improve to 6-1 in ODAC

Tigers sophomore attackman Jake O’Brien scored four goals to lead Hampden-Sydney College (H-SC) to a 13-10 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s lacrosse road victory at Roanoke College on Saturday in Salem, a H-SC press release cited.

Officials noted in the release that sophomore attackman Jared Medwar added three goals and one assist for the visiting Tigers (11-3, 6-1), while senior captain attackman John Burke had one goal and two assists against the host Maroons (9-6, 5-3).

Going into this weekend showdown, Hampden-Sydney Head Coach Jason Rostan explained the significance of the contest.

“The game Saturday with Roanoke, I think, is probably the game that every Hampden-Sydney alumni would tell you is THE game for them,” he said. “So this will be a big one, and we’re getting excited for this one Saturday.”

H-SC and the Maroons played evenly in the first quarter and were tied at 3-3 after 15 minutes, the release stated. It added that Medwar and Burke scored the first two goals of the contest at the 13-minute 18-second mark and the 12:26 mark, respectively. Medwar was assisted by Burke, who followed with an unassisted goal. Sophomore midfielder Davis Hatch followed with a goal at 7:14, also assisted by Burke.

Officials said in the release that the Tigers took control with a 6-3 scoring advantage in the second quarter to lead 9-6 at halftime. Sophomore midfielder Jake Brummett started Hampden-Sydney’s offensive run in the period with another faceoff win and unassisted breakaway goal at 11:42, the first of three straight Tiger goals. The other two came as freshman midfielder Sean Duffy followed at 9:06 and O’Brien scored again at 8:45. Duffy tallied unassisted, while O’Brien was assisted by Medwar. O’Brien added two more goals during the period at 6:26 and 2:30, while Medwar scored at 5:20. Senior defenseman Anton Kheirani provided the assist on O’Brien’s goal at 6:26, while the latter two goals of the quarter were both unassisted.

H-SC outscored the Maroons 3-2 in the third quarter to lead 12-8 after 45 minutes, the release cited. Scoring goals were O’Brien, unassisted, at 3:15, Medwar, unassisted, at 0:33 and junior attackman Jack Hayden at 0:17, assisted by Duffy.

Roanoke managed a 2-1 scoring edge in the fourth quarter to provide for the final margin, officials stated. Sophomore midfielder Charlie Doetzer closed the scoring for the Tigers with an unassisted goal at 2:46.

The release noted that Hampden-Sydney junior captain and goalie Nick Arcuri started and played the entire 60 minutes, allowing the 10 goals while making 20 saves.

Brummett was 15-for-25 on faceoffs and collected 11 ground balls, officials highlighted. Senior defenseman John Kline, sophomore defenseman Canevin Wallace and freshman defenseman Henry Hitt each had four ground balls.

In conclusion, the release indicated that H-SC is scheduled to play on the road again at ODAC foe Bridgewater College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
