FACES Food Pantry broke ground Wednesday afternoon at its new location on Commerce Road, adjacent to the Southside Family YMCA.
The construction, being done by WA Stratton Construction, will involve leveling the land, fashioning a building pad and establishing a 50-car parking lot.
The whole project is estimated to take approximately six months, Contractor Bill Stratton said.
Ellery Sedgwick, president of FACES, said he was excited to see the project developed and thanked those who have helped make the project possible.
“I’m very grateful to have this started,” Sedgwick said. “It’s been three years in the making.”
The estimated 7,000-foot facility is set to include offices, additional space for refrigeration and freezers for produce and other items, and additional meeting space for its other programs.
The new building developed in part due to a grant of approximately $500,000 from FeedMore and 2 ½ acres of land provided by the YMCA, an idea from Brad Watson of Davenport & Co LLC and the Southside Virginia Family YMCA.
