Michael Van Schaik, 58, died suddenly on April 2, 2019.
He was born June 10, 1960 in Patterson, NJ. Michael is survived by his wife Cherish. He had a full and varied life that included service in the Army with the 101st Airborne. He traveled extensively over the world and settled in Arizona for most of his adult life.
He moved to Virginia in 2014, after the death of his second wife to be the caregiver of his Aunt. He resided in Prospect, but lived in both Rice and Farmville. Michael spent his adult years in Arizona where he was a general contractor and laid floor covering. He loved animals, especially cats, and Coco, his chocolate lab. You always knew where you stood with Michael, because he believed that you should voice your opinion all the time. He hated green vegetables and hypocrites. Not necessarily in that order.
He loved football and always said that he wanted on his headstone “Montana to Rice!” and would laugh because he knew most would not understand the meaning. He also loved his wife fiercely and would never miss an opportunity to let her know that. Underneath it all, he enjoyed his life and the people around him.
A service will be held on Friday April 5th, 2019 at Shorter Funeral Home at 1905 S. Main Street, Farmville, VA at 7 p.m. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Shorter Funeral Home.
