Guided ranger hike on Wheaton Trail
Published 7:05 am Friday, April 19, 2019
Sunday April 28, Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park will host a guided hike along the new Wheaton Trail. This hike will feature the journal entries of Lt. George Peck of the 2nd Rhode Island Infantry. Lt. Peck was wounded in action right after crossing Sailor’s Creek on April 6, 1865, and used his sword as a crutch to help him back up the ridge where he soon received medical attention in the Hillsman House. The sword is now featured in a brand-new exhibit in the Visitor Center museum. Join us as we retrace his footsteps down and then up the hill as we explore the journal and bring the entries to life!
This family friendly, free admission event will be on Sunday, April 28. We will offer three tours beginning at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 1 p.m. Each tour will begin at the Visitor Center. Leashed pets are welcome. For questions about this program, contact the park Visitor Center at (804) 561-7510, or email sailorscreek@dcr.virginia.gov.
