Dumminger appointed to school board

A retired longtime educator in the Heart of Virginia was appointed to the Farmville 701 school board seat in Prince Edward County.

Dr. James Dumminger was appointed during a special called meeting held by the Prince Edward County School Board on March 25. Dumminger was present during the Wednesday, April 10, school board meeting.

Dumminger succeeds Cainan Townsend, who resigned in February and was elected to the Farmville 701 school board in November 2017.

Dumminger’s post will continue until Dec. 31. The Farmville 701 seat will be up for election in November as a two-year term. After the two-year term is over, on the election of 2021, the seat will be available for a term of four years.

Dumminger received his doctorate from Virginia Tech, and an education specialist degree from the University of Virginia. He first taught at Prince Edward County Public Schools in 1971. Dumminger served in Prince Edward for 15 years as a mathematics teacher and high school assistant principal. During his career, Dumminger worked at Buckingham County Public Schools for 16 years. During his tenure, Dumminger was appointed Acting Superintendent for one month. Dumminger retired in 2012.

“It’s good to be back in school business,” Dumminger said about the position.
