Members of the Farmville Town Council recently voted to adopt a resolution amending the town budget for the 2018-2019 fiscal year to appropriate funding the town received from Longwood University when the university and town agreed to merge their dispatch centers earlier in the year.

The funds the Town of Farmville received from Longwood University come to approximately $175,000. The town budget prior to the amendment was $29,052,894.80. The proposed budget would come to $29,227,894.80.

“This is the money that we received from Longwood University to operate the 911 center for Longwood from Jan. 25 to June 30,” Town Manager Gerald Spates said during the meeting.

Longwood University and the Town of Farmville’s dispatch centers merged, meaning that the town now dispatches the proper law enforcement for after-hours calls that take place on Longwood’s campus.

The merged dispatch center also operates the emergency call towers along Longwood’s campus, called emergency blue lights.

Prior to the merge, the town already handled 911 calls for the university. The dispatch center that operated at Longwood prior to the merge was reduced.
