Prince Edward County High School’s varsity girls team placed the highest out of all the boys and girls teams from the area at the recent Virginia High School League (VHSL) Region 2A/2B Indoor Track & Field Championships in Richmond, as the Lady Eagles finished as Region 2A runners-up for the second straight season.

They earned 87 points. With 221 points, Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School placed first out of the 11 teams to generate scores.

Leading the way for Prince Edward’s girls was junior Makayla Morris, who won the girls high jump with a 5-foot-2-inch leap. She was also part of the Lady Eagles’ 4×200-meter relay team that won with a time of two minutes, 1.62 seconds. The team also included senior Salma Muhammad, junior Naomi Jones and sophomore Haniyyah Johnson.

Placing second for the Lady Eagles at regionals were Morris, in the girls triple jump; Muhammad, in the girls long jump; and Johnson, in the girls 55-meter dash.

Lady Eagles placing third included Morris, in the long jump, and Johnson, in the girls shot put.

“Anyone placing first through third advanced to compete in the state track meet,” Prince Edward Head Coach James Baker said.

The Cumberland County High School varsity boys team, a Region 1B squad, placed fourth in Region 2B, generating 68.50 points. There were 11 teams to score points.

Leading the Dukes was senior Devon Rivera-Reed, who won the boys 300-meter dash in 41.66 seconds.

Placing second for Cumberland was senior Justin Stimpson, in the boys 500-meter dash. Placing third right behind him was Rivera-Reed.

Also placing third for the Dukes was their 4×800-meter relay team. According to MileStat.com, the relay team consisted of sophomore Jeremy Johnson, junior Tanner Cochran, Stimpson and Rivera-Reed.

In Region 2A, Prince Edward’s varsity boys team finished fifth out of 11 teams to score points. The Eagles generated 52.

They were led by junior Abdul Johnson, who won the boys long jump, with a 21-10 1/4 leap, and the boys triple jump, with a 41-11 result. He also placed second in the boys 55-meter dash.

Eagles sophomore Jarvin Perkins finished second in the triple jump and third in the boys high jump.

The VHSL Class 1/2 State Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held Monday and Tuesday at Roanoke College in Salem. Competition begins at 3 p.m. on Monday and 9:50 a.m. on Tuesday.
